I’m Jacques du Preez, and I’ve been building worlds in my head for as long as I can remember.
The Ashborn Chronicles began as a question: What would humanity look like a thousand years after something shattered global civilization? Not the clean utopia or immediate apocalypse that most stories give us, but something messier—a world where people have forgotten why things are the way they are, where systems of control feel natural because no one remembers the alternative.
That question became Kael Ashborn, an engineer who falls in love across class lines and pays for it with exile. It became the Five Houses, ruling through genetic hierarchy. It became the Wasteland clans, survivors who’ve built their own civilizations beyond the Citadel walls.
About The Ashborn Chronicles
The Ashborn Chronicles is an ongoing epic series that begins with one man’s exile and expands into continental revolution.
Currently Available (Books 1-3) - Banished — Exile and survival. A forbidden romance leads to banishment, and Kael discovers the Wasteland clans aren’t the savages he was taught to fear. - Containment — The coalition under siege. Sixty-five thousand lives depend on Kael becoming not just a symbol, but a leader. - Fracture — House unity breaks. As the Five Houses turn on each other, Kael becomes a continental symbol he can’t control.
The series asks hard questions about power, identity, and what we owe to the future. There are no easy victories. The heroes make terrible choices. And the world keeps turning regardless of what any individual wants.
Why Science Fiction?
Science fiction lets us examine the present by building the future.
The Five Houses are every system that tells you your place is determined by birth. The Wastelands are every community that survives by being written off as worthless.
I write science fiction because the future is where we can be honest about the present.
